Richard Medlock of Homestead, Florida, is creating an earthwork as burrowing owl habitat at the new Whispering Woods Nature Area. The 100 foot diameter ring of small mounds will protect the owls from visitors to the nature area. Medlock recent “Equestrian Oasis” at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park also serves a functional role, in this case, to rest and water horses.
Tom Askman and Lea Anne Lake of Spokane, Washington have been selected by the Public Art Committee to create a new seating area at the City Gym in Mullins Park.
Tom Askman is one of the original group of artists in the Northwest United States that expanded public art beyond sculpture in the plaza. Askman and other artists integrated their artwork with the architecture or streetscape to cause more public interaction. Lea Anne Lake is an artist primarily concerned with nature and inspiration. She brings a knowledge of natural processes to bear in her work and strives to create more connections between viewers, nature and wonder. Lea Anne has designed integrated architectural lighting, freestanding sculpture, benches and many amenities for public and pedestrian use. Working full time as a commission artist, she is a sculptor, ceramicist, printmaker, and painter, bringing these skills to bear in her public artwork. Her website is: artistsregister.com/artists/wa77
Marialuisa Tadei of Rimini, Italy, was selected by the Public Art Committee to receive contract to design, fabricate and install a unique sculpture to welcome citizens and visitors traveling north on University Drive from the south. Tadei is a young artist with a quickly expanding international reputation. After art degrees in London, Milan and Bologna, she has shown her work in Italy, Germany and the USA – most recently at the Artcentre South Florida in Miami Beach and ArtBasel, Miami. Artist Robyn Crosfield of Hollywood, Florida, has been awarded the contract to mark the entry to the International Peace Garden at the Center for the Arts. During the summer, Crosfield will design the artwork of mosaic tiles or glass, with installation in the fall. Crosfield has created mosaic artworks for her galley, “Mosaica”, in downtown Hollywood since 1996. She was born in Canada and has had successful venues as a fashion designer and furniture designer. The City of Coral Springs is her first commission for a public agency after completing many projects for condominiums, clubhouses and hotels. More information is available at www.mosaicaintl.com
The International Peace Garden opened in 2005 through the efforts of the Coral Springs Multi-Cultural Committee and its chairperson former City Commissioner, Rhonda Calhoun. In January of 2006, the Coral Springs Museum of Art commissioned three artists from different continents to carve three sculptures of stone from different continents. The Museum hopes to bring the total to five continents in 2007. The Peace Garden will also be an important destination on the future Downtown Pathways.
With a grant from Broward County, the Public Art Program has hired URGe of New York City and Sanchez & Maddux of Palm Beach to develop a walkway between the City Gym in Mullins Park to the Charter School in Downtown. View more information.

Amera Properties has selected artistic company, “Wet Design”, from Universal City, California to create a fountain in front of the new office building in downtown Coral Springs. Wet Design is a team of artists and designers that create fountains throughout the world. They are best known for the Bellagio and Mirage Volcano fountains in Las Vegas. They created the torch for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and the EPCOT Center Fountain of Nations. www.wetdesign.com . Date to be determined.

H&M Development has commissioned artist Gustavo Vejarano. Vejarano is a Colombian artist living in Paris who has exhibited extensively in Europe and in Colombia including the National Museum of Colombia in Bogotá. He was a professor at the Paris branch of the NYC Parson’s School of Design. His work is owned by the country of Colombia and Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá. Dedicated on February 7, 2007.

Symphony Builders has commissioned the 10 foot tall sculpture “Tropical Toss” from artist Kimberly Radochia from South Hamilton, Massechusetts. Radochia holds a diploma in studio art from the School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and a business degree from Hartwick College. Her work was exhibited in Coral Springs during the 2005 Sculpture on Sample show. In the last three years, her sculptures could be seen in outdoor exhibitions in the Ohio, Ilnious, Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Berkshires of Massuchesstts. www.leapart.com
