Ted Mena was elected as commissioner in March 2004, making him the first Hispanic-American on the commission. His family left Honduras and moved to United States when he was eight years old. As commissioner, he hopes to step up and help the Hispanic community integrate with the American culture, without losing their roots.
Mena has been a small business owner for 31 years and owns Reddy Teddy’s Car Wash, located in Coral Springs and North Lauderdale.
Commissioner Mena has been a resident of Coral Springs for 26 years and has been dedicated volunteer in the community prior to becoming a commissioner. In 1995,he was the president of Kiwanis Club and also volunteered at the Our Town Festival for many years. He was also a volunteer coach for the Children’s Soccer League and a team sponsor. In 2003, he was awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year.’
He was also one of the founders of the Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee and is currently the chairman. Presently, he is a member of the Intergovernmental Relations Committee for the Florida League of Cities and the Broward County Human Rights Council. He also participates as a Commission Liaison to the Coral Springs International Partnership and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee. Mena was recently appointed by the City Commission to participate in the Metropolitan Planning Organization, where he discusses the city’s traffic needs.
Mena has a bachelor’s degree in education from Florida Atlantic University. |
