Black Ironwood has the distinction of having the heaviest wood of any tree grown in the Unites States. The wood weighs more than 80 pounds per cubic foot and it will actually sink in water! Black Ironwood is a slow growing able to adapt to a wide range of growing conditions. This tree is considered to be one of the classic components of the tropical hardwood hammock one common in in South Florida.
