Tree Subsidy: Additional Species

CORAL SPRINGS COMMUNITY WILDLIFE HABITAT PROGRAM

To date several hundred street trees have been planted as a result of the street tree subsidy program. Of the trees planted over 80% have been Live Oak which reflects the ready availability of this tree at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, having this many trees of one species planted results, in a less diverse, less stable and potentially more vulnerable urban forest overall. If, for example, South Florida is hit by an Oak blight or other Oak specific disease it might lead to significant tree mortality.

In order to provide for more diversity in our urban forest the City Commission has agreed to add the following species to the eligible subsidy list:

Because Bald Cypress drop their needles in the winter months, the City Commission agreed that this species will be eligible as a street tree only if planted in clusters of three.  This maximizes the amount of shade provided by the trees even when they are bare.  Each individual of the three trees will be eligible for the full subsidy; for example three 12 ft. Bald Cypress would be eligible for a maximum subsidy of $600 (3*$200).

If you previously submitted an application for reimbursement for one of the trees listed above and were found ineligible we will automatically reinspect your tree. You do not need to reapply.
