At 8:34 a.m. this morning, Coral Springs Fire Department crews were called to the scene of a car that drove into the canal off the Sawgrass Expressway just west of University Drive.  When fire crews arrived they found the driver of the vehicle had swam to the shore with the assistance of bystanders, and three other persons believed to still be in the vehicle, which was submerged in approximately 25 foot of water.  The Coral Springs Fire Department Dive Rescue Team removed three patients from the submerged vehicle.  Two were transported to Northwest Medical Center in critical condition.  One of the two was declared dead at Northwest.  The other patient is in critical condition.  The driver of the vehicle was transported to University Medical Center and will be released this afternoon.  The remaining patient was taken to Coral Springs Medical Center in critical condition.  Coral Springs Fire Department personnel were able to revive the critically injured patients while transporting them to the hospital.  The critical patients’ updated conditions have not been released.  One firefighter received sutures from an injury sustained while searching the water for victims.  The Florida Highway patrol is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
