April 24, 2009: Whispering Woods Park opens to public

The City will hold its ribbon cutting ceremony at Whispering Woods Park on Tuesday, May 19 at 5:15 p.m.

The 10-acres of land was initially slated for commercial development, but the City, with assistance from Whispering Woods Homeowners Association, went about preserving the land.

The park includes two walking/jogging paths, one of which meets the standards of the Americans With Disabilities Act and another that’s made from a softer material ideal for joggers and runners. There is a fitness playground and exercise equipment inside the park, allowing parents and children to exercise together.

Residents can also make use of two pavilions, one of which will be used as an interpretive learning classroom.

“The City has plans to partner with local schools and groups to provide various environmental learning opportunities,” Parks Superintendent Louis Goldstein said.  “There are also plans to use the neighboring Red Lichen Sanctuary, one the City’s Environmentally Sensitive Land areas, for additional environmental education.”

Whispering Woods Park also features 3.3-acres of wetlands and a burrowing owl habitat that doubles as living artwork. The earthwork, designed by Richard Medlock of Homestead, is a 100-foot-diamater ring of small mounds protecting the owl habitat.

The City received a $2 million grant from the Broward County 2000 Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond Program to purchase the site. Subsequent use of additional grant money for park construction came from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program, the Florida Communities Trust and the City of Coral Springs.
