April 22, 2008: Florida Cabinet recognized the Coral Springs Fire Academy

The Coral Springs Fire Academy may have started small, but has grown to be the best in the state, attracting recruits and active firefighters from throughout Florida who want to train with and learn from the best.

On Tuesday, April 15, Governor Crist and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, along with the rest of the Florida Cabinet, recognized the Coral Springs’ Fire Academy for being titled Florida Fire Training Center of the Year for 2007 by the Florida Fire Training Directors Association.

Credit must be given to the instructors, who are highly trained and professional and are from very diversified backgrounds,” Fire Chief Mark Curran said. “It is through their commitment to excellence that we are able to apply for and win this award.”

The Academy opened for operation in 1999 at Coral Springs Fire Station 71, and by 2001, it graduated its first Firefighter minimum standards class with a 100 percent passing rate. It provides in-service and specialized training programs that are attended by firefighters from throughout the South Florida area, serving the training needs for over 35 different departments in nine counties.

“Our academy has had some of the highest passing rates in the state for several years now, and this award confirms our commitment to the quality of our graduates,” Chief of Training Robert Bertone said.

The Academy creates both basic and advanced training based on the types of incidents that are generally encountered by emergency services departments on a daily basis.

The Coral Springs Fire Academy has consistently contributed to the improvement of Fire Service Training in Florida through staff’s innovation and leadership on committees and in pioneering new, safer practices. Those innovations include the use of Conex burn structures, lightning detectors, and the Hydraulics manual, which have become standard practice for other Academies throughout the state.

The Academy is fully accredited by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training, the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
