Shortly before 8:00 p.m. this evening, Coral Springs Fire Department crews were called to the Coral Square Mall for a report of a large group of people who were experiencing difficulty breathing and skin and throat irritation. Fire department personnel responded to the call utilizing hazardous material incident protection and protocols, since the cause was unknown. All of the Coral Springs Fire Department rescue units, three fire suppression units, and three Chief Officers responded to the scene. In total, seventeen people were triaged and treated. Only two required transport to local hospitals. Fifteen persons refused transport. The cause of the incident is believed to be a pepper spray prank. The Coral Springs Police Department is investigating.
