March 20, 2008: Building Department offers workshop series

The Building Department recently hosted its second in a series of four workshops meant to help residents and contractors alike navigate the planning, permitting and inspection review processes.

On Tuesday, March 18, City Staff discussed pools, fences and screen enclosures, giving information about proper ways to apply for, then install, these items. Prior to this workshop, the department hosted another session regarding hurricane shutters, windows and doors. So far, nearly 100 people attended both workshops.

The two workshops have been successful, with the March 18 workshop receiving a 100 percent satisfaction rating from those in attendance.

“Anybody who wants to come to get a more in-depth overview of those subjects is welcome to attend,” said Maryellen Serra, Development Services Administrator. “We make the information easy to use for everyone.”

The idea for the workshop series is a direct response to business customer requests. Several attendees – including contractors and architects – of a small Building workshop last year said they wanted to know more about what exactly plan reviewers and inspectors wanted on certain hot-button topics. The City made the four, two-hour workshops a Business Plan initiative to help reduce plan rejection and make all customers better informed about Florida Building Code rules.

The next workshop about roofs is set for Tuesday, June 17 at Northwest Regional Library, 3151 N. University Drive, from 9 to 11 am. On Tuesday, September 16, the department will present expired permits at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive, from 9 to 11 am.
