The Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee had a record year and were able to award 19 scholarships to deserving students. With the generous assistance of the Coral Springs Community Chest, the Committee was able to distribute scholarships in amounts ranging from $500 to $1,500, based on the level of financial need, supplemented by the quality of community involvement. The scholarship recipients were honored at yesterday’s City Commission meeting. This year’s winners are: Melissa Smith, Victoria Reynoso, Kilee Machado, Nicole Soto, Stephanie Larenas, Mikhail Gosis, Elizabeth Chernoweth, Chelsea Nolan, Allison Friendly, Lindsay Hochman, Christanie Abernathy, Bianca Maibauer, Christopher Pellecer, Mario Bruno, Pierre-Louis Thierry, Kacie Stephenson, Bianca Deslouches, Alina Ali and Kelly Cannon. Other generous donations were made by Abundant Life Christian Academy, Christine M. Bates, Vice Mayor Roy Gold, Rhoda Glasco-Foderingham, Dr. Mark Goldberg, Hugins Construction Corporation, MetLife Financial Services, Premier Networking Alliance, Inc., State Farm Insurance Agency, Inc., and Stepping For the King, a Step Show Fundraiser to benefit MLK Scholarships. High School seniors who are residents of Coral Springs and attend Coral Glades High, Coral Springs Charter School, Coral Springs High, Stoneman Douglas High and J.P. Taravella High are eligible to apply for this scholarship for the 2008/09 school year.
