The City Commission recognized Junior Girls Scouts, Troop 95 for achieving the highest level of recognition, their Bronze Award.
Troop 95 partnered with the Breast Cancer Book Club at Cleveland Clinic in Weston to make a quilt for their Oncology Department. The girls met with their mentor, a breast cancer survivor, and learned about her story. Then, they each worked with their mentor to make a square for the quilt. They walked alongside their mentor in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” and learned about the disease from Dr. Elizabeth Stone, who specializes in breast and gynecological cancers.
After the quilt was completed, they presented it to Dr. Bernie Fernandez, the head of Cleveland Clinic. It now hangs in its Oncology Department.
The girls are in the 5th and 6th grades; most of them attend Sawgrass Springs Middle School and attended Westchester Elementary. They were recently awarded the “Good Citizenship Award” from Florida House of Representative Franklin Sands.
