October 8, 2008:I Got Caught (wearing my bicycle helmet)

The Coral Springs Police Department has partnered up with Chick-Fil-A, located at 1341 University Drive to reward kids for wearing their bicycle helmet while riding their bicycles.

The owner/operator of Chick-Fil-A, Samuel Poeana has donated 500 free kids meals to elementary school students who are caught wearing their bicycle helmets.  The purpose of the program is to promote and increase bicycle safety. The initiative is not just warn or cite those kids that don’t wear their helmets but to reward those that do.

During the last two years there were 23 crashes involving juveniles on bicycles in the City of Coral Springs. Out of the 23 crashes only 10 juveniles were wearing bicycle helmets.

For additional information please contact Sergeant George Soberon of the Coral Springs Police Department Bicycle Unit at 954-346-1763.
