At 11:35 p.m. on August 14, 2006 Coral Springs Fire Department units were dispatched to a report of a traffic crash on the Sawgrass Expressway just north of Atlantic Boulevard. When fire crews arrived they found two semi tractor-trailers and two other small vehicles with heavy damage, both semi trucks heavily involved in fire. One patient was taken to North Broward Medical Center in serious condition, one patient was transported to Coral Springs Medical Center with minor injuries, and one patient refused transport and was treated on the scene. It took fire crews from Coral Springs, Tamarac, Broward Sheriff’s Office, and Sunrise several hours to extinguish the blaze. The Sawgrass Expressway was closed in both directions during this incident. The northbound lanes re-opened shortly before 5:00 a.m. The southbound will remain closed for an unknown amount of time. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
