February 25, 2010 Suspect Arrested on DNA Results

The Coral Springs Police Department arrested a burglary suspect based upon results of DNA testing.

Steven Monillas, 32 of Coral Springs was arrested on February 23, 2010 after police connected him to a vehicle burglary based on the results from DNA testing. Police obtained a court order for Monillas’ DNA after he was caught in progress committing a vehicle burglary in a location where several vehicle burglaries have occurred. During the investigation of one of the burglaries blood was found on scene that was connected to Monillas.

The Coral Springs Police Department used forfeiture funds to contract a local DNA testing laboratory for testing. The police department felt by using a local testing laboratory it would result in a more rapid apprehension of suspects.

Monillas is being charged with one count of business burglary, eight counts of vehicle burglary, two counts of grand theft and possession of burglary tools.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Gary Scheetz of the Coral Springs Police Department at 954-346-1295.
