On Wednesday, March 31, the City Commission held a special meeting to discuss the process for filling two Commission vacancies resulting from Governor Crist’s suspension of Commissioner Vince Boccard and Commissioner Tom Powers.
To address the selection of individuals to serve in Commission Seat 2 and Commission Seat 5 during the period of these suspensions, the City will act in accordance with the requirements of the City Charter and Florida law, which includes the City Commission soliciting applications from eligible, interested parties to fill the two seats on a temporary basis.
Applications are now available at the City Clerk’s Office. All applicants must have resided within the City limits for the six months immediately preceding April 12, 2010.
The remaining Commission will review the applications and elect two applicants to fill the vacant seats. The individual appointed to Seat 2 will serve until the suspended Commissioner is either returned to office by the Governor or until November 2010, whichever comes first. The individual appointed to Seat 5 will serve until the suspended Commissioner is either returned to office by the Governor or until November 2012, whichever comes first.
On Monday, Boccard and Powers were charged by the Broward County State Attorney’s Office with violations of the Sunshine Law, which prohibits City Commissioners from discussing City business outside of a public forum, and subsequently suspended by the Governor.
The deadline to submit applications is noon on Monday, April 12, 2010 at Coral Springs City Hall, 9551 West Sample Road, Coral Springs, FL 33065.
