May 19, 2010: City welcomes Providencia, Chile delegation as part of professional partnership

City officials will welcome Mayor Cristián Labbé Galilea and Mayor’s Advisor (City Manager) Felipe Bernstein Jimenez of Providencia, Chile on Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28. The visit, which will include a small staff delegation, will focus on the exchange of best practices and strategic management techniques designed for the mutual benefit of both municipalities.

The partnership is an initiative in the City's 2010 Business Plan. Similar to Coral Springs' receipt of the Malcolm Baldrige Award for performance excellence, Providencia has earned International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification for 21 quality processes in the areas of environmental systems, security and occupational health. Providencia City officials have expressed a specific interest in learning more about access to the capital markets, including credit ratings and the issuance of municipal bonds; while Coral Springs is interested in exploring Chile’s concession systems to develop municipal public works with private financing.

City Manager Michael Levinson was invited to give the keynote presentation on Coral Springs’ continuous quality journey at the International Conference on Local Government Quality Management Standards in Santiago, Chile in July 2008, financed by the City of Providencia. “I was extremely impressed with how well the City of Providencia is run and its cutting-edge practices and processes. It inspired me to propose a mutually beneficial relationship in which both Cities could serve as an ongoing resource to each other,” Levinson said.

On Thursday, May 27 at 6 p.m., a reception will be held at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive, during which both Cities will sign a letter of understanding with the intention of leveraging each others’ business principles, practices and decision-making tools. The City will also present Mayor Labbé with a Key to the City and has proclaimed the week of May 24, 2010, as Providencia Week in the City of Coral Springs.

During their visit, Mayor Labbé, Mayor’s Advisor Bernstein and two other staff members will meet with the City Commission, City Manager Michael Levinson, senior management and other community representatives to further this exchange of information and ideas for the benefit of both municipalities’ residents.
