While off duty, Officer Lumm was riding her motorcycle with a group of motorcyclists on U.S. 27. In the late afternoon one of the lead motorcyclists lost control and crashed between the two lanes of traffic. The initial crash subsequently caused a second crash. The victim of the first crash sustained minor injuries, while the victim of the second crash, who was not wearing a helmet sustained more serious injuries to his face and neck when thrown from his bike. In the aftermath, Officer Lumm immediately sprung into action. She began by coordinating traffic control to prevent any further incident at the crash scene. She then immediately tended to the second crash victim’s medical needs. Recognizing the severity of the victim’s injuries she instructed witnesses on scene to call 911 explain that a CSPD officer was on scene and direct the operator to immediately send Life Flight Response to the crash scene. Officer Lumm then continued to stabilize the victim to the best of her ability with the resources on scene. Due to Officer Lumm’s skilled and efficient response both crash victims survived this incident. It is for this reason Officer Cherly Lumm is being awarded the Life Saving Commendation.
