In the early morning hours of March 9, 2010 while on routine patrol Lt. Backer observed a pick-up truck with multiple rims and tires in the bed exiting a neighborhood at the 5000 block of Coral Ridge Drive. Given the time of day Lt. Backer saw this as being suspicious and decided to investigate further. As soon as Lt. Backer activated his brakes to make the u-turn to get behind the vehicle, the driver immediately sped off at an extremely high rate of speed. Lt. Backer was unable to get close enough to the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop or even obtain the license plate. He was able to keep the taillights in view, however, he lost sight as it rounded the curve on Westview Drive near Riverside. Once sight was lost, Officers began to look through the neighborhood for the vehicle. Officer Crawford located the vehicle on NW 85th Avenue just south of Westview. The truck had been in a crash and was rolled over on its side. There were no occupants inside. A perimeter was set up and one of the occupants we apprehended by K9 Officer Clark. Investigation revealed that the truck was stolen from a location in Pompano Beach and that the truck was used to commit a theft of auto parts from the neighborhood Lt. Backer initially observed the truck exiting. The subject was charged with Grand Theft and trespass in an occupied conveyance for being in a stolen truck.
The victim was identified and $1400 worth of tires and rims was returned. As a result of Lt. Backer’s instincts, observations and swift actions one subject was arrested and another has charges pending. It is for this reason Lt. Backer is being awarded the Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
