Recognizing automobile burglary as being a crime plaguing the restaurants along University Drive within our City, Officer Lombardo made an effort to more diligently patrol this area within his zone during peak burglary hours. His efforts paid off when on February 9, 2010 he heard a car alarm sound behind Big Bear Brewery. Upon approach he noticed a dark color vehicle quickly leave the area of where the alarm was sounding. He quickly checked the area to see if the vehicle had been broken into while keeping the suspect vehicle in sight. Officer Lombardo then followed the dark vehicle, which quickly pulled into a parking spot as if to evade him. Two individuals exited the vehicle and proceeded to make their way towards the restaurant. Intuitively, Officer Lombardo proceeded to drive past the two males so as to give them the impression that he was not interested in them. Once Officer Lombardo passed them, he observed the suspects quickly return to their vehicle, after entering the restaurant for mere seconds. Officer Lombardo quickly turned around and made contact with the two suspects. As a result of Officer Lombardo’s investigation he was able to determine that the males had committed a burglary that had not yet been reported behind Big Bear Brewery in which a purse was stolen. Additionally there was a BOLO out of the University of Miami identifying the vehicle and driver as being involved in multiple auto burglaries on campus. Officer Lombardo’s keen observation and excellent investigative skills led the arrest of two burglars targeting not just our own City, as well as the recovery of stolen property. It is for these efforts Officer Lombardo is being awarded the Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
