On November 13, 2009 Officer Tony was conducting marked unit Patrol in the area of a reported attempted burglary. As he was patrolling with his windows down he heard the sound of glass breaking in the proximity of a nearby residence. He exited his vehicle and began checking the residence. Upon approaching the rear of the residence he observed two males at the rear window. Both males were wearing latex gloves and one was holding exercise weights. Upon confronting the men and identifying himself as a police officer the suspects fled on foot, discarding their latex gloves in the process. Officer Tony was able to apprehend one of the subjects on foot and shortly after Road Patrol apprehended the second subject. The victim’s property was found on both suspects and both suspects confessed. It was also learned that both males were ‘Gangster Disciple’ gang members. During the incident, despite having to pursue on foot, Officer Tony gave clear and concise information over the radio, impressing all involved. Officer Tony’s outstanding observation skills enabled him to catch burglars in the commission of a burglary, in broad daylight. To catch someone in an on-view, daylight burglary of a residence, in-progress is an extremely rare occurrence. Officer Tony’s actions reflect great credit upon the Special Operations Component and demonstrate his skill as an officer. It is for this reason Officer Tony is being awarded the Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
