On October 18, 2009 Officer Gabino volunteered to work plain clothes in an unmarked car in the Corporate Park. While patrolling, Officer Gabino observed a vehicle occupied by two subjects backed into a parking space in the area of a closed warehouse. Due to the suspicious location and positioning of the vehicle Officer Gabino decided to conduct surveillance on the vehicle from across the street. While watching the vehicle he observed the vehicle proceed to a location in the rear of the warehouse where all of the businesses were closed. Based on his familiarity with the location he also knew it was an area where there was no exit. Officer Gabino followed the vehicle and observed the two occupants park beneath a roof access ladder. Upon Officer Gabino’s approach he observed two additional males climbing down the roof access ladder. One of the men was wearing latex gloves and the other was carrying a bag of burglary tools. Officer Gabino quickly took control of the situation and held all four suspects until back up arrived. Upon further investigation, Officer Gabino learned that the two males climbing down from the roof had attempted to burglarize a high-end fragrance distributor by removing the roof vent. During this investigation Officer Gabino identified suspicious activity, conducted covert surveillance and executed a thorough investigation resulting in the arrest of four suspects believed to be part of a burglary ring stationed in Hialeah. Additionally, the same suspects are believed to be connected to a similar burglary within the corporate park. It is for these actions Officer Gabino is being awarded the Excellent Police Initiative Commendation.
