In honor of Coral Springs Swim Club Head Coach Michael Lohberg’s life and amazing coaching abilities, the City Commission passed a resolution on December 6 to name the 50-meter pool at the Aquatic Complex in remembrance of him. Lohberg passed away back in April after a lengthy battle with a rare blood disorder.
“I just want to take the opportunity to thank the City Commission. Michael would be very honored and it’s just wonderful to know that his name and his memory will live on at the pool,” wife Biggie Lohberg said. “He loved his work and he loved to be at the Aquatic Complex.”
Lohberg, a native German, was six-time Olympian Dara Torres’ coach and confidant. They trained at the Aquatic Complex for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He coached at six Olympic Games having qualified swimmers for every Olympics from 1984 to 2008. He had an incredible eight swimmers make the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including Torres.
“We wanted to name part of the facility in memory of Michael because he was a large part of our success,” Director of Aquatic Services Mike McGoun said. “We were fortunate to have someone of that caliber at our facility.”
“He did a lot for our community and he did a lot for swimming nationally and internationally. As a City, we’re very proud of the work that he did here,” Mayor Roy Gold added.
The Aquatic Complex is located at 12441 Royal Palm Blvd.
