On Tuesday, April 3, 2011 at 5:30 p.m., N.W. 29th Street will officially be renamed “Ben Geiger Drive.” The ceremony will take place at the entrance to Mullins Park, 10000 N.W. 29th Street.
On December 6, 2011, the City Commission passed a resolution that N.W. 29th Street will now be known as “Ben Geiger Drive.”
Otis Benjamin Geiger served on the Coral Springs City Commission from 1974 to 1990, and was Mayor for 12 of those years. Mayor Geiger was an integral part of the early development and growth of Coral Springs. Under his leadership, many of the current city facilities in Coral Springs became a reality, including the Coral Square Mall, construction of the Sawgrass Expressway, the City Center (now known as the Center for the Arts) and the original Public Safety Building.
After Geiger’s passing in July 2011, a committee was formed to consider naming a facility after him. The Geiger Family had requested naming a street after Mayor Geiger and the committee felt 29th Street, between Coral Springs and Coral Hills drives would be most suitable as he was so instrumental in the growth of Mullins Park and the Center for the Arts.
The City Commission would like to thank those volunteers who worked with staff as part of the committee, including former City Commissioners Don Sanders and Rhonda Calhoun, as well as long-time resident Jim Reilly.
