The Tennis Center of Coral Springs hosted a Youth Tennis Day on Saturday, March 24. The event was a free clinic to introduce new players ages five to 12 to the game of tennis using the new Quickstart Format. Fifty boys and girls participated and were divided into groups according to ages. Each group spent 30 minutes with each of the Tennis Center’s USPTA certified Tennis Professionals, who were on hand to instruct their students utilizing the new Quickstart program.
The Quickstart program uses age appropriate equipment including shorter nets, shorter courts, shorter rackets, and softer tennis balls. This allows the students to learn at an accelerated pace and achieve success more quickly. The 5 and 6 year olds played over an 18 inch net instead of the normal 36 inch size. They used 19 to 21 inch rackets and larger low compression tennis balls. The 7 and 8 year olds played on a 60 foot court rather than the normal 78 foot court, used 23 to 25 inch rackets and a low compression ball. The 9 to 10 year olds also used the 60 foot court, 25 inch rackets and a low compression ball.
“We are seeing great results and quicker success using the Quickstart format, which is allowing many of our students to actually play the game of tennis much quicker than before,” Tennis Director, Kevin McCarthy said.
The tennis program continues on a year round basis, with a new session of group classes beginning every 5 weeks, as well as camps during the summer, spring break and winter break. For more information regarding the City’s tennis program, call 954-344-1840.
