City’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations begin January 18
 

The City’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration events will be held on Friday, January 18, sponsored by the Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee and Citibank, as the Title Sponsor. This year’s keynote speaker is Joan Higginbotham-Mitchell, one of only three African American females to fly in space to the International Space Station. Higginbotham, a Chicago native, earned a degree in electrical engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1987 and later earned her second master’s degree in space systems from Florida Institute of Technology.

Business Luncheon – Friday, January 18 at 11:30 a.m. A business luncheon featuring Joan Higginbotham-Mitchell will take place at the Church by the Glades, located at 400 Lakeview Drive. Tickets are $35 per person.

Community Celebration - Friday, January 18, 7 p.m. The evening celebration will take place at the Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive, and will feature music, song, dance and drama, highlighted by a keynote address by Mrs. Joan Higginbotham-Mitchell. Student winners of the Art & Literary Exhibits will be presented with awards on stage at this event.  This is an uplifting evening that is sure to please all ages. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for children 17 and under.

VIP Reception – Friday, January 18, 9 p.m. A VIP reception will follow the Community Celebration at the Center for the Arts. This is an excellent opportunity to meet and mingle with Higginbotham-Mitchell and enjoy some good fellowship. Reception tickets are $20.

Diversity/Leadership Workshop – Monday, January 21, 9 a.m.  High school and middle school students will have a chance to learn about diversity and leadership. The event will be held at the Coral Springs Gymnasium and begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Students will have an opportunity to converse with their elected officials and earn service hours.

Tickets for all of these events will be available as of December 1 at City Hall in the Mall at Coral Square Mall and City Hall, located at 9551 West Sample Road. For more information on any of the events, please call 954-344-1005.
