Coral Springs- On January 30th, 2013 at 4:30 p.m., Coral Springs Fire Department crews were called to the scene of a strange odor in a medical office building located at 9750 NW 33rd Street. When units arrived on the scene, they were immediately bombarded with dozens of people exiting the building, all complaining of skin irritation and difficulty breathing.
Since the cause of these medical conditions was not known, a full scale hazardous materials incident was declared. This HazMat response included HazMat Teams from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Sunrise Fire Rescue Departments as well as rescue trucks from Margate, Tamarac, North Lauderdale, and Lauderhill.
Only after the patients were being evaluated did a person approach firefighters and claim she may have set off her personal pepper spray in her purse.
In all, ten patients were treated; eight of them required transport to area hospitals.
