The Coral Springs Police Department has concluded the internal affairs investigation regarding an incident with a Coral Springs resident, Susan Mait, that took place on October 4, 2011.
On October 4, 2011, Mait's vehicle became disabled on Royal Palm Boulevard. Officers Fernandes and Stasnek made contact with Mait in order to provide her with the necessary assistance to have her vehicle removed from the roadway. During the course of that contact a verbal argument ensued that led to Mait's arrest.
On March 22, 2012 the Coral Springs Police Department was contacted by the State's Attorney Office who advised that an allegation of untruthfulness had been filed against Officers Fernandes and Stasnek by Attorney Michael Catalano. The ASA conducted an investigation into the allegation and in October of 2012 concluded that no charges would be filed against the officers.
After receiving notification of the State's Attorney findings, the Coral Springs Police Department Internal Affairs began their investigation. Despite Mait being uncooperative in providing a sworn statement the department conducted a thorough investigation into her initial allegations.
The Coral Springs Police Department IA investigation was concluded with the following findings:
Officer Fernandes:
Perjury - unfounded
Untruthfulness - not sustained
Discourtesy - unfounded
Officer Stasnek:
Perjury - unfounded
Untruthfulness - sustained
Discourtesy - sustained
Based on these findings Chief Pustizzi has recommended a suspension of 80 hours for Officer Stasnek.
