Officers were dispatched to a residential burglary in progress. With the assistance of K9 two suspects were located and upon being pursued fled on foot. Upon having his escape route blocked, one suspect jumped into the canal attempting to swim across in order to evade officers. At approximately the mid-point of the canal, the suspect indicated he was in distress, stating, “I can’t make it”. Without regard for their own safety all three Officers entered the water to attempt rescue. Locating the man was difficult due to being fully submerged, however, The Undercover Detective saw the man’s wallet floating to the surface and was then able to locate his body with his foot. The Detective dove down and pulled the suspect up at which time he began to panic and physically resist the rescue attempt. Officers Lombardo and Gariepy also at this point fully immersed in the canal assisted The Detective in swimming the suspect to shore at which time he was taken into custody. The suspect would have undoubtedly drowned had it not have been for the efforts of these three officers.
