The VIN Unit was investigating a large South Florida drug trafficking organization. The DEA was also investigating the same organization and asked the VIN Unit to participate in a joint investigation coined as “Operation Phat Cat”. The investigation became even more complex when it was learned that the head of the drug trafficking ring’s wife was a legal assistant in the Grand Jury division of the U.S. Ten members of the VIN Unit were assigned to this sensitive investigation and later deputized as Deputy U.S. Marshalls. At the conclusion of operation “Phat Cat” 9 members of the drug trafficking organization were arrested on federal drug trafficking and public corruption charges. Approximately $200,000 in U.S. currency, 725 grams of powder cocaine, 175 Oxycodone tablets, 4 vehicles and 2 firearms were seized.
