Craigslist cellphone robbery ends with suspect shot and killed.
Two individuals posted an add to sell a Samsung cell phone on Craigslist and then tried to rob the buyer at gunpoint of cash. The buyer pulled his own firearm, shooting and killing one of the suspects. On April 2, 2014, at approximately 12:19 a.m. Coral Springs Police responded to the area of 2900 Riverside Dr in reference to reports of shots fired. When officers arrived on scene they found a male, Jason Mageau, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. Another individual, Duwayne Lewis, claiming to be Mageau's friend was also located on scene. Lewis stated that he and Mageau were attempting to sell a cell phone when the buyer attempted to rob them. Lewis stated Mageau was shot after he did not comply. Mageau was transported to Broward Health North where he was later pronounced deceased. Around 2:15 a.m. Coral Springs Dispatch received a call from Dermaine Spencer who advised he was involved in the incident. Spencer gave police his location. Officers responded and made contact with Spencer. He advised that he was attempting to by a cell phone after seeing an add on Craigslist. When he arrived at the purchase location Lewis and Mageau attempted to rob him. During the robbery, Spencer stated Mageau produced a firearm and began to strike him over the head. Spencer then retrieved his own firearm from within his vehicle and fired, striking Mageau. Spencer then left the scene after the shooting for his safety. Spencer was able to produce his firearm as well as the one used in the attempted robbery which had fallen into his vehicle during the incident. Lewis was later charged with murder for his involvement in the robbery that contributed to Mageau's death. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Dave Young at 954-344-1800.
