Earlier this year Officer Clark was dispatched to an in-progress vehicle burglary at a local apartment complex. Officers’ on-scene observed the suspects entering vehicles and removing items. Upon arrival, Officer Clark and his K9 partner, Mik, tactically approached the suspects. Despite Officer Clark’s verbal commands to surrender, the suspects fled on foot.
Officer Clark deployed Mik to apprehend the fleeing suspects. K-9 Mik was able to take one suspect to the ground. Officer Clark proceeded to order the suspect to place his hand behind his back; however he refused to do so and continued to struggle, while keeping his hand on an object in his waistband.
During the struggle, the suspect fell backward, causing a .25 caliber semiautomatic handgun to fall from the suspect’s right hand. K-9 Mik dragged the suspect out of reach of the gun, and he was taken into custody. This was clearly a potentially deadly situation for everyone involved. Officer Clark’s quick thinking and exceptional K9 handling skills averted a potentially critical incident. It is for this reason that K9 Officer Scott Clark is being awarded an Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
