On Thanksgiving 2013, Detective Koenig was called to the scene of an armed robbery in which a suspect approached a family of six, brandished a firearm and demanded the family’s valuables. One of the victims was physically thrown to the ground in order to obtain her necklace. The suspect fled in a waiting get-away car. The victim obtained what they believed to be the first three digits of the license plate and identified the vehicle make and model. With this information, Detective Koenig began to tirelessly investigate; searching and cross referencing databases with the little information he was given.
In less than 24-hours he came upon what he thought was a viable match, located the vehicle in Pompano and then engaged our Tactical and Gang Unit to assist with canvassing the area for the vehicle owner, who had an active warrant. The surveillance was successful. In the process of taking the owner into custody her vehicle was inventoried at which time property taken in the robbery was recovered.
It was determined that the vehicle owner was not a party to the robbery; however, she provided the name of the suspect in possession of the vehicle at the time of the robbery. A photo-lineup was shown to the victims, at which time they confirmed that the suspect was in fact the one who robbed them. Enlisting the assistance of the US Marshalls (of which Detective Koenig is a US Marshall Task Force Member) the suspect was located and apprehended in the City of Pompano. That suspect revealed the whereabouts of his accomplice, who was also located and taken into custody. With nothing but a partial tag, a vehicle description and relentless determination, Detective Koenig was able to remove two violent offenders from the streets of South Florida. It is for this reason that Detective Koenig is being awarded the Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
