Late last year Officer Carvalho responded to a local Wal-Mart in reference to a petit theft in which the victim left her purse at the self-checkout counter only to return and find that it had been stolen.
Officer Carvalho reviewed the video surveillance tape provided by the store and learned that two females removed the purse and then departed the area in a white Honda. He noted that one of the suspects was wearing a Marjory Stoneman Douglas sweater and used her personal American Express credit card to pay for her purchase prior to exiting the store. Armed with that information, Officer Carvalho took the necessary steps in order to contact American Express to identify the suspect. The card was associated to a female resident of Heron Bay.
Upon making contact with the woman, she identified the two females as her daughters. Officer Carvalho made contact with both girls, obtaining full confessions from each of them. The victim advised she only sought reimbursement for her stolen property and did not wish to press charges. Officer Carvalho facilitated the restitution for the victim. Officer Carvalho went above and beyond the normal duties of a patrol officer to identify these suspects and solve this case. It is for this reason he is being awarded an Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
