While on patrol late last year Officer Wilkins observed a suspicious vehicle. Upon witnessing a traffic violation he stopped the vehicle. When he contacted the driver he observed the occupants acting strangely, making overt movements within the vehicle and appearing to place something under the passenger seat. Upon assisting the occupants from the vehicle, he discovered a firearm under the passenger seat and an additional firearm located within the cabin of the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that both occupants had a criminal past and he learned through NCIC/FCIC that the firearm was stolen from North Lauderdale. Officer Wilkins contacted the investigating detective and learned that the firearm he had recovered was stolen along with over 100 other firearms from a massive burglary two months prior. Both suspects confessed to having the firearm in their possession and were arrested. Recovering a stolen firearm from subjects with criminal histories is a valuable accomplishment as it most certainly contributes to the prevention of future crimes. It is for this reason that Officer Wilkins is awarded an Exceptional Police Initiative Commendation.
