Alex Hernandez

Alex Hernandez joined the City of Coral Springs as a Chief Building Official in 2015 and was promoted to Director for the Building Department in October 2019. Prior to joining the city, Hernandez served 19 years with the City of Fort Lauderdale as an Inspector, Plans Examiner and Assistant Building Official. He has been a state licensed contractor for 33 years. His earlier career was working as a production electrician at the Sun Sentinel printing plant for 11 years.

Hernandez sits on the Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board for the State of Florida and is a member of the Building Officials Association of Florida, Florida Association of Plumbing, Gas & Mechanical Inspectors, Florida Floodplain Managers Association, Association of State Floodplain Managers, and the International Code Council. Hernandez is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professional in Building Design & Construction. (LEED AP BD+C).

Under his leadership, the Building Department and its members are committed to protecting life and property by ensuring all building structures are safe and meet the minimum standards of the Florida Building Code. Prior to Hernandez joining as Director, the city did not offer online permitting – now, the city provides online e-permitting for all construction projects.  

He is committed to offering state of the art technology to streamline the permitting process for businesses and residents. In 2019, Hernandez launched the city’s Residential Permit Application Checklist. Hernandez is overseeing plans to upgrade permitting software that will allow for the Building Department to offer electronic plan review – eventually providing all services paperless and online. 

Working for the City of Coral Springs has allowed Hernandez to work with like-minded, problem-solvers who enjoy assisting customers with their projects from start to finish in a timely manner. As a father, he enjoys coaching little league for his son, physical fitness and trying new restaurants.
