Memorial Day
Please join the City of Coral Springs with support of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, is hosting a special Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27 at 9 a.m., in honor of the brave men and women of our military who have given their lives in service to our nation.
The ceremony will be at Veterans Park, located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd. (just east of University Drive).

Guest Speaker: Commander Tom Melville, USN - Ret.

Commander Tom Melville was born and raised in Rochester, NY. After college he was accepted into Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Pensacola, FL in 1966. He was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After six months of continued schooling in Pensacola, he completed the 7 month Air Intelligence Program at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO.

In 1968, Lieutenant Junior Grade Melville reported to Carrier Air Wing Fifteen at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Ca. as Staff Intelligence Officer. He then made two combat cruises to Southeast Asia aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43), home ported in Alameda, Ca. He briefed and de-briefed pilots and air crews before and after combat missions over Vietnam.

Completing active duty in 1970, Commander Melville then served in Naval Reserve Intelligence units in New York, Washington, D.C., and Florida until retiring in 1993. These reserve units supported active duty Joint Services Commands. These included the Atlantic Command, the Central Command, and the Special Operations Command. Commander Melville’s Top Secret Security Clearance required renewal every 5 years to serve in these positions.

Awards include a Letter of Commendation from the Naval Reserve Intelligence Command, and nine Campaign Medals and Ribbons.

As a civilian, Commander Melville is retired from his company, Gold Coast Sales. He is a member of Broward Navy Days, Military Officers Association of America, Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, Navy League, and Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs.

Tom and his wife Joanne reside in Coral Springs. They have three adult children, Jessica, Gregory and Drew, all Coral Springs High Alumni, and six grandchildren.

A lasting tribute to veterans with the Veterans Brick Program:

Veterans, families and friends of Veterans, and members of the local and surrounding communities can purchase an engraved brick that will be integrated into the section and serve to memorialize and honor veterans of all eras and services.

The Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs will continue the sale of commemorative bricks to be installed at Veterans Park in Coral Springs. Plans are to unveil newly installed bricks twice per year on Veterans Day (November 11) and Memorial Day (Fourth Monday of May).
