Suspicious Incident at J.P. Taravella H.S.

Post Date:04/04/2019 2:20 PM

At approximately 7:36 a.m., a student at J.P. Taravella High School notified a security monitor that she saw a former student on campus carrying a large-bag. A Code Red was issued by school administration, and the School Resource Officer was notified. He immediately transmitted to Coral Springs Police dispatch for response.

A Unified Command with Coral Springs Police and Fire was immediately established outside of the perimeter of the school, while Coral Springs Police Officers made entry into the school to begin clearing and investigating the reported incident.

Officers cleared the entire campus, while other police personnel reviewed surveillance video. It was established that the reported suspicious person was an actual student who resembled a former student.

We are proud of the student for coming forward to alert officials of the possible security risk. The quick actions of school security, administrators and the two Coral Springs School Resource Officers assigned to the campus, aided in our department’s ability to provide a comprehensive response. By obtaining this information so rapidly, our officers along with the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Broward School Board Special Investigations Unit, were able to quickly and efficiently begin searching for the suspect. From our established Unified Command Post, our Coral Springs Police and Fire first responders were able to deploy to multiple locations to secure the campus. We received additional support from Margate-Coconut Creek and Tamarac Fire Rescue.

Teachers and students did what they were trained to do and as you can imagine, it was a stressful incident for personnel and students. We encourage families to speak to their children about the incident to ensure their mental well-being. As always, call 2-1-1 for assistance and resources.

We commend school personnel and students for their actions today.
