Tara Chattergoon, a Water Treatment Operator - Class A, has served at the Coral Springs Water Treatment Plant since October 2019. A female pioneer in the male dominated industry of water treatment, Tara began taking courses in water treatment at Palm Beach State College, later passing the state exams, and hired to serve as the first female Water Treatment Operator in the Village of Tequesta.

Tara believes those who serve in the field of human consumption of water play an important role in the health, safety, and well-being of the community. During natural disasters, such as a hurricane, Water Treatment Operators like Tara are deemed essential for the continuity of operations and to ensure safe drinking water for Coral Springs customers.

As the second woman to serve as a Water Treatment Operator for the city, Tara’s performance and job function is just like that of her male counterparts. When she first learned about the training and position, Tara’s initial reaction was “That’s a man’s job!” Something Tara now says, “Is a career more women should consider pursuing, one I regret not choosing sooner.” Adding, “It’s never too late to start something new, be self-confident and positive.”

There are many opportunities for men and women to learn about and study different trades that benefit communities. The City of Coral Springs is proud of employees like Tara, who are breaking barriers in the workforce and seek a rewarding career in public service.
