Coral Springs, FL – On Saturday, June 19, 2021, we are excited to host an in-person commemoration at Sportsplex Tom Messenheimer Field (2575 Sportsplex Drive) in honor of Juneteenth, Freedom Day – a day that symbolizes the abolition of slavery in the United States of America. Gates open at 5 p.m. with mainstage entertainment from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The commemoration will include a reading of the emancipation proclamation, Spoken Word by May Rain with visual artist Jaquale Rhule, and special performances by international blues singer-songwriter, Kat Riggins and the Valerie Tyson Band.
Reflecting on the significance of this celebration, Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons said, “For me, the deep layered meaning to the end of slavery in American history is equally as important as our independence as a nation. We must never forget that on this day thousands of enslaved men, women and children were finally free. I am proud of our city for commemorating Juneteenth again this year. It is my hope that this will serve us as a reminder of our history and as a steppingstone in our work towards creating the kind of country we want for future generations.”
Juneteenth marks the liberation of thousands of enslaved men, women and children of Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 – two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln had already signed the Emancipation Proclamation. In addition to the listed entertainment, the event will include messages of hope from community leaders, step performances and a historic perspective about the significance of Juneteenth.
To ensure the safety of our residents, POD seating will be utilized for this event. The first-come, first-serve event will prioritize Coral Springs residents with proof of residency. Attendees with proof of residency will receive a voucher to enter the parking area for entry and parking, free of charge.
