Opening Reception: Thursday, January 20 | 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Whether it be a painting, a wood-based sculpture, or a large-scale installation created with found objects, much of Luis' work is based on the philosophy of Constructionism. Through his work, he explores how the individual, society, and even the work itself are influenced and created by each other.

His 3-dimensional work consists of constructed environments that often starkly juxtapose each other or tell a narrative, showing the chasms and shifts in perspective that may exist from one person’s lived reality to the next. His paintings serve to amplify the experience by evoking memories, moods, and emotions. Viewers are able to navigate these physical spaces and draw relevant conclusions themselves, leaving the door open to interpretation on subjects such as identity, inequality, and community.

Garcia-Nerey’s pieces intend to further explore the narrative of cyclical patterns that recur throughout time and place, while also questioning biases created by the real and artificial borders that are inevitably present in everyday life. His constructed environments meditate on the connections and separations formed between home, community, and development, referencing social issues such as economics, gentrification, immigration, displacement, and race, among others.

Visitors will be able to ask the artist questions at the Opening Reception, and during an artist talk and other events to be held at the Museum. Dates for additional programming in conjunction with this exhibition will be forthcoming on the websiteand social media channels.
