Coral Springs, FL – The National League of Cities (NLC) announced their appointment of Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons to serve on their Board of Directors for a two-year term. This selection comes a week after Simmons was reappointed to serve as Vice Mayor for the City of Coral Springs. In September 2021, Simmons was appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities Advocacy Committee.

Regarding the national role he will serve, Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons said, “As a member of the NLC Board of Directors, I have the responsibility and the opportunity to improve the quality of life for our constituents by focusing on fiduciary oversight, strategic planning, and implementation of policies that will support and advance NLC’s mission. It has been a humbling experience to have been appointed to this position and I vow to work hard to ensure I honor the organizations mission with the best intentions for our constituents.”

Elected to office in November 2018, Simmons made history as the first African American Commissioner in Coral Springs to be elected since the city became incorporated in 1963. He has been an instrumental voice for the Black community in Coral Springs, leading initiatives like ‘Conversations with a Commissioner,’ a video series focused on open discussions about race, equality, and police policies.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Simmons graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Master of Science in Psychology from Florida Atlantic University. Prior to his Coral Springs career, Simmons worked in the mental health field and as an educator at Coral Springs High School. Currently, Simmons works in the private sector as an Account Manager for Hotwire Communications.

The NLC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group comprised of over 2,700 municipalities nationwide looking to improve the quality of life for all citizens. As an appointed member to the NLC Board of Directors, Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons will focus on helping to steer the organization as they look to live out their mission: By establishing the physical and intellectual space for the labor movement to imagine its future, the mission of the NLC is to make higher education available to workers, to prepare union members, leaders and staff for the challenges of a changing global environment; and to serve as a center for progressive thought and learning.
