Lieutenant Nicholas Mazzei has been a Coral Springs resident since 1985. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 1997 with an undergraduate degree in chemistry. From there he went on to Nova Southeastern University where he graduated with a master’s degree in physical therapy in 1999. After working in the physical therapy field for a few years, Lt. Mazzei decided to change careers and became a law enforcement officer for the city of Coral Springs in 2001.
Upon becoming a police officer, Lt. Mazzei worked as a road patrol officer for four years. In 2005 he became a detective in the Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit. In 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. During his tenure as a sergeant, Lt. Mazzei supervised road patrol, the Bicycle Unit, the Substation Unit (now Street Intelligence Unit), and the Strategic Enforcement Team. In 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he is currently assigned as a patrol shift commander.
In addition to the above, Lt. Mazzei has also been a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) since 2002. He has held a leadership position on the team since 2005. He is currently the second in command of the SWAT team, and holds the title of Executive Officer. During the course of his career, Lt. Mazzei has been awarded three Exceptional Police Initiative Commendations; four Team Citations, supervised the Unit of the Year 2012, and was named Officer of the Year for 2007. During the same year (2007), Lt. Mazzei was also recognized as the Broward County Officer of the Year.
